My favourite things of 2024 – Part 4 of 5 – Gulu Reading Club

Funding innovative programs to further children’s literacy in Uganda.

There is so much to say under this “favourite thing” that I have to split this post into 3 stories.

Here is the story of Benitah and the Gulu Reading Club.

1) “I have an idea…”

I still remember when Benitah Annet reached out about an idea for a reading club for children at St Peter’s Primary School in Gulu, Uganda. After hearing her passion to make a difference, I left it with her to lay the foundation for the program.

Benitah approached the school headmaster of St. Peter’s to get permission to run the program at her school, recruited 15 fellow students to volunteer alongside her, and did all of the planning and coordinating.

NITEO came alongside to fund training for the volunteer literacy leaders, program supplies, and volunteer honorariums.

With your support, we were able to run 2 sessions for 170 children each session for a cost of $7/child. Thank you!!
